Social Distancing
Six Feet. Two Meters. Stay At Home. Essential Travel Only.
It spread faster than any of us expected
and the ramifications are severe.
Severing ties with friends and family alike,
likening our living situations
to some kind of solitary isolation,
confined to finding entertainment inside.
Entertain this thought, for a moment.
It’s moments like these when social media
finally finds its intended place:
not a way to compare your capricious life
to the carefully curated instagram stories
telling a fictional fantasy, but
finding a way to stay up to date
on the wellness and needs
of the people you see frequently
but may fail to appreciate
until you’re separated.
Here’s another thought experiment,
Since we’re trapped inside
with little to do but ponder.
The virus is spreading like religion.
Unpredictable, unstoppable,
planted like a little idea
that you can’t quite shake, and it grows.
And it’s forcing families together.
Forcing them to rely on one another.
To deal with family drama
and to live with each other
in a broken harmony. As far as I can tell,
That’s what religion is all about.
Dare I pose the question:
Can there be silver lining in the virus?
Not to discredit the pain of death
but remember that if there is life
after death (or even if there isn’t)
then they’re not hurting anymore
and for those of us that are still living,
still hurting, still suffering
still loving
is our love made deeper in the face of doubt?
It spread faster than any of us expected
and the ramifications are severe.
